In case you are not fond of very hoppy ales, rest assured this one is well balanced. I recommend it to everyone, especially those who have never had a single malt beer!

My dear wife recommended that someone should change the name, however, to something a little more "catchy". She suggested "Fischer's Blue Ribbon", or whatever you might want "FBR" to stand for! In any case, I hope you all get to try it before my brother drinks it all!

Congratulations to Jon and everyone at Powerhouse!!!

I was there to get a glass of the Brown Ale on Thursday night. It tasted great. The head was a little weak but it still had good mouth feel and the low foam allowed it to be poured quickly with the long line that was waiting for a taste! I went back Friday night and they were already out so I guess everyone else thought it was pretty good too.

I look forward to this beer returning and I am also anxious to try the others that are fermenting. Maybe Jon can reply here with a schedule (or best guess) of what is coming and when.

See you all at the CACA meeting tomorrow night.

Brad

Just saw these at Great Fermentations. They are color coded and numbered. They are made to a certain specific gravity. Sterilize them and put 'em in your primary. As the beer ferments the bigger numbers (higher gravities) will sink. Lets you see the progress of your fermentation without risking contamination with a hydrometer reading. $25. Not sure its worth it, but still a really cool idea.
[ image disabled ]

Anyone hear about this? This was in the Northern Brewer Newsletter. I don't know if it is a real concern or just marketing:

HOP SHORTAGE
------------
2007's supply of hops is unfortunately not expected to meet the
worldwide demand. The hop shortage is expected to last about 2-3
years. The good news: we contracted an adequate supply of hop pellets
for us to supply our customers for the 2008 calendar year.
The bad news: the 2007 crop is not yet ready for shipment, and the
2006 crop is nearly sold out. The situation looks pretty bad now (if
you look at our website, most varieties are unavailable). The 2007
crop is just beginning to ship, and we expect the situation will only
improve from this point forward.

Please bear with us, and try experimenting with some of the newer
varieties we have brought in, like Ahtanum, Boadicea, Lublin, Marynka,
Newport, Northdown, Premiant, Progress, Sladek, Sterling, and Vanguard!
It's time to get creative folks!

I go in and apparently bartholomew county REMC gets a 4,000 dollar laptop stolen from them. (They share an office with us) They show me pictures from the security cameras of me waving my arms at the cameras. Apparently that's enough for someone to get charged with theft, lose their jobs, and get completely screwed.

So basically here is the run down. In the last 2 months my work over extended me, worked over 200 hours in September alone. In the course of running around and working that much, I rack up a 3,000 dollar milage payment that is owed to me. So, instead of paying me, they blame me for stealing.

Isn't life grand.....

Has anybody had any experience with these: enough heat source, enough of a heat dispersal in the ring, better price for a better product somewhere else?
I've also been asking around for used kegs, and so far my only option is buy a keg of beer with deposit, and not return the keg. I'd prefer to NOT do that, especially since I'd like to get 3 of them. Also, what type of keg do people recommend: stainless steel or aluminum (i don't even know where to begin finding a stainless steel one).
Thanks!!

You can get version one of the book for free off the author's website. I'm still in the research phase of my brewing career and will be looking to assemble my brewing supplies over the next 12 months or so. Any one every make their own wort chiller? If so I'd be interested in hearing about it. I'm also interested in talking to someone who's attempted to grow their own hops. Well when I get to Columbus again (probably in Nov.) I'll stop by and have a beer.

The question came up on how we are are going to store the barrel until everyone has their English IPAs ready for the barrel. Here is what I have found.

Mix up a solution of (1) ounce of sodium metabisulphite and half (1/2) ounce of citric acid per gallon of water.

The barrel is filled, then when needed, rinsed and filled

Any thoughts on the matter?

Saturday, June 12 at 2:00pm
Brew- B-Q
Sun King Brewery

EVENT NAME: Brew-B-Q 2010 – The 4th Annual Gathering of Indiana Homebrew Clubs

COST: FREE - But if you can spare a few bucks donation to help cover some expenses, that would be great.
Note: The FBI covers all the upfront costs, but some voluntary donations to try to help us break even are greatly appreciated and will insure that this great
day can continue to happen. We have never received enough money to cover all the expenses, but if we do, those funds will be reserved for the next year’s event.

DATE / TIME: Saturday, June 12th, 2:00 - 7:00 pm

LOCATION: Sun King Brewery at 135 N. College Avenue – Near East side of downtown Indianapolis

WHY YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS IT: One of the featured attractions for this event is clear from the name, Brew-B-Q. One of the FBI members, Frank Petrarca, has a giant smoker and cooks up some awesome smoked meats. Frank has been known to stay up all night the night before the event to prepare an incredible selection of smoked meats. Thanks Frank! Various FBI members will also be providing an assortment of chips and side dishes, but your contributions are welcomed and appreciated. Last, but certainly not least, there will be plenty of homebrew for sampling. Please bring whatever you would like to share. In previous years, several clubs have gone all out, with custom jockey boxes, many kegs of beer, etc. Others may just show up with some bottles of homebrew in a cooler. Both approaches are welcomed and appreciated. What matters most, is that you attend and enjoy the day.

Some other great reasons to not miss this event include:

--- Drop off your entries for the State Fair Brewers Cup during Sun King’s tasting hours (1:00 – 4:00). Also, multiple BJCP judges will beavailable if you want some advice on the best category to enter your beer in. Just bring an extra bottle or two for this evaluation.
